Hinged Lid or Slide Lid — Which Fits Your Product
The two closure styles differ in how they open and store:
-
Hinged lid
Stays connected to the base, so the box opens with one motion and closes with a snap. This suits products opened repeatedly, such as mints, balms, small tools, or sewing kits.
-
Slide lid
Detaches completely and moves along channels in the sides, giving a cleaner seam line and a slimmer profile. This is common for gift tins, candy, and stationery kits.
Each mechanism has different trade-offs. A slide channel leaves a small gap where the lid meets the body, so slide tins are more prone to dust or fine powder entering the seam over repeated use.
A hinge has no open channel, but the hinge assembly typically adds tooling cost and a few extra millimeters of overall height compared with a slide lid at the same body size. Choose based on how the product is accessed and stored, not on price or dimensions alone.

Volumes above are calculated from outside dimensions and are not usable fill capacity — wall thickness, hinge or slide hardware, and any insert all reduce the space actually available for product. Confirm usable capacity against the internal drawing for the size you select.
Custom Printing & Finishes
Decoration options include CMYK and Pantone printing, embossing and debossing, and matte, glossy, or metallic finishes, applied according to the artwork and tin structure.
For products going into direct contact with food, cosmetics, or another formula, tell DOLYPACK what will be packed before the material and interior finish are confirmed. Interior lacquer and coating options are reviewed case by case, and formal food-contact certification is not published as a standard specification, so confirm that requirement upfront if it applies to your product.
For balm packaging specifically, see balm tin sizes and lid types.
